Low-battery alarms should not become the emergency
The smoke alarm waits until 3:14 in the morning to announce its fading battery with one tiny, devastating chirp every forty seconds. Not enough noise to locate it quickly, but exactly enough to prevent sleep. By sunrise I am standing on a chair interrogating every ceiling in the house.
